How do I get a Library card?

Novi Resident Adult

For those age 18 years and over, bring your valid Michigan driver's license or state-issued ID with current Novi address -OR- picture identification (passport or out-of-state driver's license) AND one piece of official documentation showing your name and Novi address, such as a current (signed within last 3 months) lease or purchase agreement; a current (dated within last 3 months) gas or electric bill; or current property tax bill to the Library for your Library Card.

Novi Resident Youth

For those under age 18, a parent or guardian (guardianship papers required) must bring the above identification and/or documentation to the Library.  If the parent or guardian has a valid library card, it must be in good standing to register their child for a card.  Parents who sign the child's card will have access to account information and are responsible for materials.

Purchasing a Novi Library Card

Non-residents who have a library card from a library that is a member of The Library Network (TLN) may choose to relinquish their home library card and purchase a Novi Public Library card for an annual fee instead, as stated in the Schedule of Loans, Fines, and Fees.

Non-residents whose home libraries are not part of the TLN network may purchase a Novi Public Library card for an annual fee as stated in the Schedule of Loans, Fines, and Fees.

Do I need to bring my Library card with me each time I visit the Library?

Yes. A valid Novi Library card or other valid TLN library card is required for all services in the library. But the smartest card in your wallet just got even smarter and easier to use! Use your smart phone to add your Library card and/or family members' Library cards to any of these apps (Cardstar, Mobile-Pocket, or NPL Mobile App), making it more convenient to scan at any checkout station. For more information click here.

Where can I use my Library card?

Once you have registered for a Novi Library card, you may use it at any TLN shared system library without further requirements. For standalone libraries in TLN, please contact each individual library to inquire about their policy for reciprocal borrowing.

What if I have a library card from a different library?

If your home library is TLN shared system library (shares the patron database system) and is valid, your card is already in the system and available for use at Novi Public Library.  If your home library is a TLN standalone library (does not share the patron database system), you will need to register your home library card with the Novi Public Library the first time you use it here.  Bring your home library card and your valid Michigan driver's license or picture identification (state-issued ID or passport) showing your current address to register.  Patrons under the age of 18 need to have a parent present to register their card.

How do I renew my Library card?

Library cards must be renewed annually with valid picture ID and proof of Novi residency and/or business ownership. All fines and fees must be paid in full prior to renewal. Prior to renewing a child's card, parent's card's fines/fees must be paid in full as well.

Do I have to return all materials to the Novi Library?

Books (other than MeLCat items) may be returned to any TLN library. However, audiovisual materials should be returned to the Novi Library. STEAM kits and Mobile Hotspots MUST be returned only to the Novi Library circulation desk. A fine is assessed if they are returned in the Library lobby bins, the Library drive-up return, or to any other TLN library.

How long may I keep my library materials?

See Schedule of Loans, Fines, and Fees for detailed information about circulating Library materials and consumable supplies available.

How do I renew my library materials?

You may renew library materials by phone after providing your Library card number or by logging into your My Account page.

How do I download an audiobook, a magazine, or free music?

Click here to see our downloadable media.

What do I need to know about borrowing DVDs, Blu-rays and games?

DVDs, Blu-rays, and games are available for home use only. To borrow a movie or game, you need to have a library card from a TLN library and it must be registered in our system. Watch your due dates, as these items have shorter loan periods, and late fees are $1 per day.

Please be aware of the following issues regarding our movie and game collections:

  • Library staff check DVDs, Blu-rays, and games for damage when they are returned. If you have a problem with a DVD, Blu-ray, or game you have borrowed, please notify the library staff immediately. Do not attempt to repair the item yourself.
  • The patron assumes responsibility for DVDs, Blu-rays, and games in their possession. The Library is not responsible for any damage that may occur to patron's DVD/Blu-ray/Media (etc.) player while using the Library's materials.
  • Overdue notices are sent after 7 days. You will be sent a bill for a replacement if it is overdue 28 or more days.
  • You may return DVDs, Blu-rays, and games in the library lobby bins or in the drive-up return slot.

What if the item I want is checked out?

You can get on the waiting list for the item, so when the item is returned, we will hold it for you and notify you that the hold is available.  To place a request for an item, you can use our Web Catalog and the "Place Hold" button for the book you want. You will need a valid Library card and pin. Or you can contact us, and a librarian will be happy to assist you. If you send another person to pick up the item, that person must bring the Library card in the name of person who has the available hold, in order to check out the item.

Non-Holdable Items in the Library:

  • International Books (Adult & Youth)
  • Magazines (Adult, Young Adult, & Youth)
  • Luck Day
  • 7 Day Encyclopedias
  • Holiday Picture Books

What if the item I want is not owned by the Novi Library, but is owned by another library?

You may request that a library that owns the item, and is willing to lend it, send it to the Novi Library for you. When the item arrives at Novi, we will notify you by email or phone.

To place a request for an item, you can use our Web Catalog and the "Place Hold" button for the item you want. You will need a valid Library card and pin. Or you may call us or stop by the Information Desk, and a librarian will be happy to assist you. Keep in mind that not all materials can be interloaned from other libraries. If you have questions, feel free to contact us. If you send another person to pick up the item, that person must bring the Library Card in the name of person who has the available hold, in order to check out the item.

What if I can't find the item I want in the Catalog?

We might be able to get the item from another library outside our local Catalog system by searching the MeLCat database.
