• Novi Resident Adult
Residents of Novi may present a valid picture ID and proof of Novi residency, which includes a valid driver's license or a current (dated within last three months) piece of mail showing the resident's name with a current Novi address or address that pays Novi taxes. All documentation must show resident's name to be used as proof of residency.

If a resident cannot produce a valid piece of mail as proof of residency, the Library will mail a verification postcard to the resident's Novi address, which can be returned in person to the Library as proof of residency.
  • Novi Resident Youth
For those under age 18, a parent or legal guardian (guardianship papers required) must bring the above identification and/or documentation to the Library.

If the parent or legal guardian has a valid library card, it must be in good standing to register their child for a card.  Parents or legal guardians who sign the child's card will have access to account information and are responsible for materials.
  • Novi Resident Sponsor
Residents of Novi who are affected by special circumstances (i.e. temporarily or permanently homebound, exchange student or temporary resident residing in a host household of a Novi resident, etc.) may be eligible for library cards when an approved sponsor will be added to their account.

The sponsor must be a Novi resident with a picture ID and proof of residency within Novi.  The sponsor can apply at the Library for the sponsored resident’s library card by presenting the sponsored resident’s valid picture ID and proof of Novi residency.

To obtain a card for the sponsored resident, for which they’ll be responsible, the sponsor’s library account must be in good standing with the Library (i.e. all fees are paid in full).  The sponsor must co-sign for the library card and they
will be held responsible for all debts/obligations/fines incurred by the sponsored resident and for the return (or loss) of materials borrowed by the sponsored resident. Under the Novi Code of Ordinances, Section 19-5(d), the sponsor who has borrowed property from the Library shall be deemed to be the person to whom the property was lent.

Novi Public Library Residents
Library cards for Novi residents (18 years and older) that are in good standing will automatically renew annually after our system confirms your Novi residency. A confirmation email is sent to let you know your card is valid for another year.

At the time the automatic systems checks your card (31 days prior to expiration), if your account is blocked or residency can’t be verified, your library card will not automatically renew.

Accounts are usually blocked due to lost items, too many overdue items, or fees in excess of $14.99. Accounts for Novi residents under 18 or those that are not for Novi residents are not eligible for auto-renewal.

The system only checks one time one month before expiration, so even if your account later changes to a good status, the time for auto-renewal eligibility will have passed.

If auto-renewal is unsuccessful, you will receive email notifications to renew in person.  These email reminders will be sent 30 days before, 7 days before, 7 days after, and 30 days after your card’s expiration date.

If your Novi resident card fails to automatically renew, you must renew annually in person with your physical or digital library card, a valid picture ID and proof of Novi residency. All fees must be paid in full prior to renewal.

For a child’s card, the registered parent listed on the account must present their library card and driver’s license and the child’s library card for renewal. All fees must be paid in full on both the child’s card and the parent’s card prior to renewal.

Non-Novi Residents of The Library Network Shared System
Any TLN Shared System library cards must be renewed at the home library where they were registered. Each library will follow its own renewal schedule.

  • Policy on Charges for Overdue Materials, Damaged, Destroyed or Lost Materials and Consumable Supplies
NPL is permanently fine free, but due dates will remain and be important. We want materials to come back on time so other guests can enjoy them too.

Guests will still be charged fees for lost or damaged materials but not overdue fines on items returned past the due date. One or more lost or damaged items or more than 24 overdue items on an account will block a guest, and privileges will be suspended.

You are responsible for all materials checked out on your card.  Keep library items in good condition for the next guest.  The Library will notify you of charges for lost or damaged items. Substitute materials cannot be accepted in lieu of payment. No refunds will be made.

Fees for Damaged, Destroyed or Lost Materials
