What is the Tween Battle of the Books?
The Novi Public Library Tween Battle of the Books program began in 2004. This fun program is designed to encourage reading, develop reading comprehension and retention, and recognize young people who like to read.
Who may participate?
All 5th and 6th grade students who live or attend school in Novi are eligible to participate by organizing their own teams of 3-6 students plus an adult coach.
What does the adult coach do?
Any parent, teacher, or other interested adult over 18 years of age may be a coach. All coaches must attend a kick-off meeting at the Novi Public Library. Coaches keep their teams motivated and make sure members are reading their books.
What happens during the Battle of the Books program?
Students read from a selected list of 6 books and then participate in a contest where each team answers questions about those books. Prizes will be awarded to first, second, and third place teams. Prizes are also awarded for best team name as well as three categories of best team costume: most creative, most like their team name, and best handmade.
How do we enter the Battle of the Books?
An online registration form will be available beginning in late November. The first 12 teams to complete their entry form will be eligible to participate in the Battle.
Battle of the Books Titles
Titles of the six selected books will be announced at the Coaches’ Kick-Off Meeting held in December. Each team receives one copy of each title. Additional copies of the books are available at the Novi Public Library for check out with a library card.
